Fallen star

We dream of paradise and perfection,

They dream of some semblance of normality.

We dream of mansions and money,

They dream of food in their belly.

We dream of sailing the world,

They dream of trying to stay afloat.

We dream of excitement, and striving to reach the summit.

They dream of peace, and a safe place to lay their heads.

We have nightmares of appearing naked in public,

In their nightmares they are naked in the torturer’s cell.

Born into a warzone,

Three years of living in terror.

With no end in sight,

Your parents paid the ferryman.

For a day or two, the angry sea

Drowned out the sound of shelling in your head.

And then at last, you came to rest,

As water filled your tiny lungs.

All promises lay unfulfilled,

Those modest dreams were not to be.

The only peace you would ever find,

A fallen star beside the sea.
